25th April, 2021 | Shoreham & Otford CC | Shoreham, Kent
ACME 214 defeated Shoreham & Otford cc 143
Sun, runs and wickets in Season Opener
The first match of 2021 was against old friends Shoreham in the beautiful Darent Valley, Kent.
A strong and well-balanced ACME side mustered under sunny skies that belied the true 'real-feel' conditions. The fact is that we're barely out of winter and when a breeze sprang up, it was definitely still 'double-sweater' conditions.
ACME batted first, having lost the toss. Whiting and Goel opened proceedings putting on 56 at 5-an-over and seeing off the openers before Shoreham introduced James' own personal kryptonite; a leg-spinner throwing up full-tosses. Unable to resist, James swung hard and miscued to a waiting fielder.
Hoskin (24) and Goel (36) both managed starts before both falling the same way; LBW to the leggie. Suvagithan (57) continued where he left off in 2020 (114 vs same opposition) making run-scoring look sublimely simple before a rare misjudgement saw him chip a catch when looking well set. The middle order then subsided somewhat, managing to present Shoreham with both a team hatrick and a personal hatrick, split across overs as ACME fell from 189-5 to 199-9 with 5 overs remaining.
Fortunately, stout rearguard action by Prest (5) and Kelly (4) saw ACME bat out the full 35 overs managing a healthy 214/10 when Scott was run out on the last ball.
Shoreham began cautiously, sitting behind the run-rate but keeping wickets in hand. At 80-2 at the halfway mark, we were still concerned at the prospect of a second-half assault, having been on the receiving end of a 'Shoreham Surge' in the past.
Fortunately for us (and unfortunately for Shoreham), their attempts to push the run rate collided with the unerring accuracy of Masterson Snr, resulting in a mini-collapse soundtracked by the repeated clattering of middle-stump.
Shoreham fell from 80-2 to 89-5 in 3 overs and this largely decided the match.
Hume (J) and Day for Shoreham rallied somewhat but tight bowling meant the required run-rate continued to climb and a sharp runout from Suva (one of two!) ended the partnership. Hume did well to bat through but eventually ran out of partners, the match ending as an ACME victory.
